New water main works will mean '˜six week road closure'

Work is to start next week on the final phase of a £1.5 million water mains renewal scheme in Horley - which will bring road diversions and closures in coming weeks.

Sutton and East Surrey Water will begin replacing ageing mains - cast iron pipes dating back to 1889 - in Victoria Road, Horley, with larger diameter high performance plastic pipe.

The works are scheduled to begin on July 4 at the junction of Kings Road, progressing towards the junction of Massetts Road and will require the use of two and three-way temporary traffic lights.

The second phase of works is due to begin on July 25 when 140 metres of new pipe will be installed between the junctions of Massetts Road and Consort Way East and will mean the road will be closed for around six weeks.

A signed diversion route will be in place throughout the closure. Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as normal throughout the works.

Sutton and East Surrey Water say the scheme is the final part of a much larger project in the Horley area in which the company has invested a total of £1.5m over the past four years.

Project engineer David Plumadore said:“The existing water main is reaching the end of its useful lifespan and we need to carry out these essential replacement works now to reduce the risk of mains failures, and to assure the security of water supplies to the area for the future.

“We are aware these works may cause some local disruption, but this vital work has to take place if future water supplies are to be maintained.”
