Ninety new flats get the go-ahead
A controversial application to build flats and retail units in Horley town centre has been approved.
Ninety one and two-bedroom affordable flats and four to five retail or restaurant units will be built at the former Newman House site, in Victoria Road.
The application, by Thames Valley Housing Association, was granted on January 23.
The development will be six storeys at its highest and have 89 parking spaces.
Andrew Baird, chairman of Horley Conservatives said he spoke against the application during the council meeting when the decision was made as he felt the application did not aid the development of the town.
He said: “It’s a big development which doesn’t compliment the site it’s going into. It will be the tallest building in Horley.
“We have more charity shops than most small towns so there’s no pressing need for shops and we have housing development going on around Horley .
“The site was originally an office development.
“Horley has plenty of restaurants right now. Horley needs jobs and people bringing in money.”
Cllr Natalie Bramhall, Reigate and Banstead borough council executive member for regeneration and property, said: “We have been clear from the outset that we want to see a high quality mixed-use development - primarily residential and retail - on the Newman House site to encourage more people to visit the town centre for longer and to spend more locally. The approved scheme is similar to that envisaged.
“Importantly, the redevelopment of the site can be delivered quickly, which will boost confidence in Horley.”
