Crawley’s Labour group opted for experience when came to the selection of a new mayor.
Langley Green Cllr Brenda Smith will take over the role from Cllr Bob Burgess (Con, Three Bridges).
Her deputy will be Bewbush Cllr Chris Cheshire.
Labour leader Cllr Peter lamb (Northgate) said: “The choice was all down to the group.
“I think people thought she was a reassuring face to have back at the top table and she is as experienced as anyone can get. You really need a firm hand on the tiller at some meetings.”
Cllr Smith, who will officially take office at the annual council meeting on June 13, said she was thrilled to be named mayor 24 years after she last held the role.
She added: “The group was 100% supportive and that’s the main thing, that the group and the staff at the town hall feel you can do the job.”
Cllr Smith will name her chosen charity at the annual council meeting.
