Crawley Borough Council opened a book of condolence in memory of Tony Benn but, so far, only 13 people have signed it. The veteran Labour politician died on March 14, aged 88. His funeral was held on Thursday (March 27). The book of condolence was suggested by Labour councillor Brenda Smith and approved by the mayor Cllr Bob Burgess (pictured). It can be found near the reception desk in the Town Hall. Cllr Smith said: “We didn’t all agree with everything he [Tony Benn] said but there was absolutely no doubting his sincerity and honesty.
“He made many friends and enemies because of that but he was, in my opinion, one of the most conscientious and iconic politicians of the past 60 years.
“He never veered from what he believed to be right.
“I believe there are people in the town who will want to show their respect.”
