Outdoor seating proposed for County Mall coffee shop
A PLANNING application has been submitted to provide an outdoor seating area for a proposed coffee shop within County Mall.
The application is for Unit 55, which was formerly let to Barratt’s, and plans to change the highway at the back of The Perfume Shop and Pineapple, into an outdoor seating area on Friary Way.
It hopes to be able to provide tables, chairs and umbrellas for customers.
In the design and access statement submitted to Crawley Borough Council it states: “The addition of the glazed frontage and seating area will add vitality to what is currently a dull corner on a busy pedestrian route between the bus station and town centre.”
The application was made by The Crawley Unit Trust on August 8 but plans show signs to be that of Costa.
A spokesperson for Costa said: “As this is a planning application, it’s very early days. Unfortunately I have no information on this particular location and cannot confirm whether or not an application has been put in for Costa.”
Martin Haynes, County Mall manager, said: “We have been approached by Costa for the unit which is now progressing. The application is now in the hands of the planners.”
Fourteen bike racks will need to be relocated under the proposals and two representations have been received.
One opposes the relocation of the bike rack, which is planned to be relocated along the walkway towards the Memorial Gardens at the side of County Mall, as it will be in a “darker more hidden location”.
The second representation states the racks will be very close to a wall which makes cycle parking difficult.
Crawley Borough Council is expected to make a decision on application CR/2012/0402/FUL
by October 3.
