Gatwick Airport’s runway was closed following an oil spill.

Passengers have taken to Twitter saying planes were grounded and others diverted on Monday morning (February 29).

Kristina Rihanoff said: “Typical Monday.. The whole @Gatwick_Airport is shut down and flights reverted to other airport just my luck”

Passengers have reported being stuck on jets for more than an hour, said the BBC.

A Gatwick spokesman said: “Arriving and departing flights recommenced from Gatwick at 11:38am

“The runway closure has caused some flights to be diverted to a range of other airports in the area and there will be delays to some departing flights. Friends and family waiting for passengers should contact the relevant airline for the latest information.”
