Pease Pottage woman out of ultimate baking battle

‘Car crash crackers’ proved fatal when they left a Pease Pottage woman out of an ultimate baking battle.

Cathryn Dresser left BBC Two’s The Great British Bake Off after crumbling under the pressure of a gruelling biscuits round involving the creation of a Buckingham Palace gingerbread house.

The mother-of-two wept on camera after her elimination from the competition which attracts three million viewers a week, and she was ‘a little bit heart broken’ at having to leave.

Speaking of the moment now, Cathryn still wished she’d stayed another week.

“I always said when I leave as long as I have done my best it’s OK and that week I didn’t feel I had done my best.

“When you have done badly on the first challenge it’s really hard to pick yourself up again and I think I just let it get to me.

“It was my brother’s idea to make a Buckingham Palace gingerbread house and I cursed him for that.”

The endearing 27-year-old provided bowls of entertainment with her comedy quips and impassioned moments of crisis.

She said: “It’s hard for me to judge but Mum said they seemed to show me a lot, probably because I was a calamity!

“I’m very self critical so I often was watching it through my hands.

“Before the first show came on I felt sick but it wasn’t as bad as I thought.

“It comes across on TV exactly as I experienced it.”

The Marks and Spencers assistant is now excited to take her passion further with Sarah-Jane Willis, from Bewbush, who left the show the week previously.

She said: “We did the cake and bake show and did two big demos which were a bit calamitous.

“I was mixing at one point and I said ‘don’t over beat it because it’ll go runny’ then I looked down and noticed it had gone runny.

“Then I had to do a big reveal and all the icing was running off the cake and everyone laughed.

“We’re only human though and I think people like that.”
