Police warning over catalytic converter thefts

Police are warning car, and particularly van owners, to be vigilant after several recent thefts of catalytic converters from unattended motor vehicles across Crawley.

Crawley District Commander, Chief Inspector Justina Beeken, said: “Unfortunately, since Saturday (12 January) officers have received 10 reports of thefts of catalytic converters, which contain valuable metals and are relatively easy to remove for thieves with the right know-how.

“To wake up in the morning and discover your mode of transport has been damaged in this way is very distressing. I would urge vehicle owners to be on the look out for any suspicious activity in their area and report it immediately to police. If possible vehicle owners should get their catalytic converters marked so they can be easily traced if stolen and always try and park your vehicle in a well lit area.

“The recent thefts occurred in Manor Royal, Three Bridges, Southgate and Gossops Green and extra patrols have been assigned to these areas in an attempt to deter further thefts. Please call 101 quoting serial 763 of 18/1 if you have any information that could help us with our enquiries no matter how relevant you think it is.”
