Police investigate after death of man at Gatwick Airport train station
Police have launched an investigation after a 33-year-old man killed himself with a broken bottle at Gatwick Airport train station concourse this morning (Wednesday February 8).
At around 2.50am police responded to a report that a man was acting strangely at a shop in the South Terminal.
Officers spoke to the man, who was speaking a foreign language, via a telephone interpreter service and at about 3.25am asked him to leave.
Officers walked him to the train station concourse.
Police said the man tried to take his own life with a broken bottle. Officers tried to restrain him as they and others administered first aid at 3.30am
He was taken to an ambulance where he was declared dead.
Sussex Police has referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) which has investigators to assess the circumstances.
Chief Supt Paul Morrison said:”This is a traumatic event and Sussex Police is co-operating fully with the IPCC on an investigation, which still in the early stages. It was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as police had contact with the man before his death. Unfortunately due to the complexity of the investigation we cannot add any more detail at this time, other than to say it is not terrorism-related.”
The airport and railway station are operating as normal.
