REVEALED: The most unhygienic food outlets in town

A STAGGERING 91 of Crawley's restaurants, food and catering businesses are failing basic hygiene standards, say town hall inspectors.

According to a new online 'scores on the doors' system - a ratings scheme designed to highlight the best and worst in the borough - almost a quarter of businesses don't come up to scratch.

Environmental health officers inspect and score food premises using three criteria – food safety and hygiene, structure and competency management.

Twenty three per cent of all Crawley food venues inspected were served up a miserable one star or less, meaning they fall short of hygiene levels required by law and have ratings of 'poor' or 'very poor'.

Resident Dr Arijit Bose, from West Green Drive, said he was horrified at Crawley's dismal showing.

He added: "I think it's quite dangerous that so many restaurants in Crawley have been given this rating. To learn that so many are not maintaining high standards is quite alarming.

"And to find out that people in the restaurants are not doing their job to the highest standards is not great."

A rating of zero-stars was served up to 28 businesses tested since February 2007.

ASDA, on Pegler Way, and The Fortune Villa Restaurant on the High Street were among the 28 businesses that inspectors branded 'very poor'. The caterers 'generally failed to comply with legal requirements' and were given a zero star rating.

McDonalds on Haslett Avenue got a grilling with just one star, a dubious honour shared with Gatwick Manor and the McDonalds Drive Thru on Ring Road North.

Only 12 businesses in the town managed the top rating.

St Catherine's Hospice scooping two five-star awards, one for the hospice kitchen and another for the education centre.

The remaining 50 per cent of businesses scooped two and three-star certificates. The council calls a three-star rating 'good', while a two-star business is only 'broadly compliant with the law'.
