He called for ‘proper economic arguments’ instead and told UKIP leader Nigel Farage: “I do believe that uncontrolled immigration is a bad thing.

“The issue is that the way that debate is held engenders distrust in our population.

“Mr Farage said we need to get control of our borders because if we don’t then there will be an increase in terrorism. That’s exactly the type of scaremongering that worries me.”

Romesh accused the Government of ‘contradicting itself’ over junior doctor’s contracts. Conservative Secretary of State Stephen Crabb said the Government aimed to address higher mortality rates for NHS patients during the weekend. Romesh said, given the Government was stating junior doctors were not the cause: “Why is it that in direct response to dealing with the weekend effect that you’re changing the contracts for junior doctors? You’re sort of contradicting yourself there.”

Labour First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones said on the topical debate show he ‘did not want make a song and dance about’ giving most of his £10,000 pay rise to charity.

Romesh pointed out that he nevertheless mentioned it.
