School praised by Ofsted inspectors
Desmond Anderson School
A headteacher has praised the efforts made by his staff after Ofsted inspectors delivered a glowing report.
Desmond Anderson Primary, in Tilgate, was visited by inspectors on November 29 and the school’s performance was increased in rating from ‘satisfactory’ to ‘good’.
Some teachers were judged to be outstanding. The report stated: “Many aspects of teaching have improved significantly since the previous inspection so that no teaching is less than good and some is outstanding.”
Pupils were observed to be making good progress, while those in the Special Support Centre were “outstanding”.
The behaviour of children was praised and it was noted that they were “extremely considerate” towards each other.
The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the children was marked “exceptional” and the inspectors felt the curriculum was preparing them for the next phase of their learning.
The school was advised to ensure that the assessment of reading skills was equally effective as that of mathematics and writing.
Headteacher Terry Quinton said: “We are very pleased, especially that Ofsted acknowledge the effort the staff have put in.
“A very large majority of parents and carers who responded to the online survey agree that the school keeps their children safe and that behaviour is good.
“The inspectors observed lessons, talked to pupils, staff and governors. The pupils were unanimous in their praise of the school.
“There was a high level of motivation among the staff to strive for excellence.
“The governors have supported the school well and provided extra support for pupils to ensure achievement is high.”
