Scouts out and about in Queens Square

Crawley Scouts occupied the band stand and took centre stage in Queens Square on Saturday (October 6) to give people a taste of the activities the organisation has to offer.

At the start of the day, the Cubs’ annual Conker Competition was held and won by 1st Crawley with 7th Crawley as close runners-up.

The climbing wall (provided by Adventure Unlimited) proved very popular with visiting members and non-members alike.

There were craft and food activities, kayak padding challenge and a Duke of Edinburgh Award display. Throughout the day a geo-caching and treasure hunt were held taking the participants around the town centre in search of clues.

The purpose of the day was to provide taster sessions for potential new members and adult volunteers and attract additional youth members through seeing some of our activities.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of Scouting whether it be for Beavers (6-8), Cubs (8-10), Scouts (10-14) and Explorer and Network Scouts (14+). During the day interest was shown by a number of parents and adults in roles such as helping with the sections as leaders or assistants and supporters undertaking a multitude of tasks.

In response to the interest shown Eddy Hills, District Commissioner said “From the people who came forward today we are hopeful of signing up a number of new leaders and also forming a Scout Active Support Unit who will help run some of the events we hold and provide assistance at our campsite.

“The support we received today from members, visitors, and retailers has been tremendous, everyone enjoying themselves on a warm and dry October day. Thank you to the organising team.”
