Seasonal cheer from town’s Easter Team

A team of volunteers demonstrated the true spirit of Christmas when they handed out more than 100 food parcels to Crawley’s homeless and people in need.

The Easter Team - led by vice-chairman Charlie Miles - were at Crawley Baptist Church, in West Green, on December 21 where they handed out the record number of parcels.

Charlie has been a member of the team since it started 20 years ago and, as some one who has personally experienced homelessness, fully understands the hopes, fears and needs of people living on the streets or simply unable to make ends meet.

Rosemary Benwell, of the Easter Team, said: “The team want all these people to feel special at this time. So at the Crawley Baptist Church a whole raft of festive Christmas parcels for individuals or families were handed out in the traditional way that has marked this time of year for over 15 years in Crawley.”

The team acknowledged that, given the tight financial times, the numbers who have been helped all through the year had been considerably higher than usual.

But they thanked members of the public for the donations of food, particularly the collections of harvest food given by churches, schools and individuals.

Rosemary added that such donations: “enabled the Easter Team to continue providing food at their regular Saturday meals, as well as the essential food parcels.

“For Christmas, special gifts of crackers, mince-pies, Christmas puds, chocolates and other trimmings have been received and 80 chickens have come from a local butcher. But so great is the need this year that a further 30 or so chickens had to be bought.”

The Easter Team will be at Sainsbury’s on January 5 collecting non-perishable produce for more food parcels.
