POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a security guard was assaulted in Broadfield Barton when he challenged two suspected shoplifters.

The assault took place near the car park on Saturday February 11 at around 3.15pm. The men punched and kicked the 38-year-old Morrison’s guard when he confronted them about the theft of five bottles of whiskey from the store.

The victim was left shaken and sustained a small cut to his neck but did not seek medical treatment. The bottles were found nearby.

Police received a call from a man who witnessed the assault and are appealing for this man to come forward again.

A 35-year old local man was later arrested on suspicion of assault and battery, and attempted theft, and was released on police bail until March 13 while enquiries continue.

PC Ken Luke said; “That caller, and anyone else with information about this attack is asked to contact us via 101 quoting serial 0920 of 11/02.”
