Should councillors be paid extra for chairing meetings?

A COUNCILLOR who earned £1,100 for chairing one meeting has pledged to donate the money to Crawley charities.

Jennifer Millar-Smith, Conservative councillor for Maidenbower and wife of Crawley MP Henry Smith, was due to receive the payment for chairing a two-and-a-half hour parking scrutiny panel.

But following criticism over her remuneration she promised to give the money away.

The money will go to an Ifield charity for the learning disabled, Outreach 3 Way, and Local Help Crawley, recently set up by Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club and Crawley Happy Times.

She said: “Had I been interested in that money I would have it in my bank account right now. I didn’t ask for the money; I did not ask to be paid for that responsibility.”

Why not take part in our poll (right)? We want to know whether you think councillors should be paid extra for chairing town hall meetings.
