Slideshow: Safety first for Junior Citizens
More than 1,000 year six children will have visited Crawley Borough Council’s annual Junior Citizen event at The Hawth by Friday (September 21).
The fortnight-long event is aimed at teaching children how to recognise potentially dangerous situations and what to do when faced with them, as well as helping them to learn valuable life skills to encourage responsible citizenship.
All Year 6 children - 1,100 10 and 11 year olds - from 21 schools in Crawley will have attended either a morning or afternoon session by the time the event closes.
Issues covered include road safety, community safety, healthy living, reducing energy use, safety in the domestic kitchen, safer rail travel, personal safety, fire safety, water safety, and reducing water use.
The Mayor, Cllr Keith Blake, visited the event on Thursday (13 September). He said: “Junior Citizen has been a roaring success for more than 20 years.
“It was great to see so many young people learning and having fun at the same time. I hope it continues for at least another 20 years.”
The event is supported by Crawley Borough Council, Crawley Luxury Coaches, Crawley Neighbourhood Watch, Crawley Wellbeing, the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, the Probus Club of the Sussex Weald, Southern Water, Sussex Police, West Sussex County Council and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
