Young members of Crawley Lions act as flag bearers for district convention

Crawley Lions had plenty to roar about when they were presented with four awards at the weekend.

Ten members of the club ventured to Folkestone on Friday (February 1) to join other Lions clubs from across the south east for the 42nd district convention.

Of the seven awards presented over the weekend, Crawley president Colin Durham received the Club Excellence Award while his group was also recognised for best scrapbook of press cuttings, best website and for being the club which had made the most visits to other clubs.

The Crawley group was described by district governor Phil Robinson as “the fastest growing club in the district” - an achievement which Lion Gary Davies attributed to the influx of younger members to the group and the publicity it has received from the Crawley Observer.

Describing the successful weekend, he said: “The whole club feels elated.

“I have only been down in the south east for three years - having been a Lion for 40 years – and it’s the first time that I have seen a club pull together as much as the Crawley Lions have done.

“A lot of that is due to the youngsters who are in the club and also to the help that was given by the Crawley Observer when I first came down and could see the club was faltering.

“At the time, we had seven members and four left us but now we have 24.”

As well as being the fastest-growing group in the district, Crawley Lions also has the youngest membership when it comes to age.

And, despite having been on the road since 5.30am to get to the convention, four of those young Lions formed the flag party at the beginning of the event.

They were Tumsil Abbas, Sammy Jones, Kate Moore and Nusaybah Amedh, The fifth flag bearer came from the Thanet club.

The convention proved to be a particularly special occasion for Nusaybah, who was introduced to the guests by Gary Davies as the south east’s candidate for the Young Ambasador award, which will be held in Birmingham later this month.

Gary added: “She was welcomed with great applause. All-in-all, it was Crawley Lions’ most successful convention in its 50 years history.”
