Surprise trip to Malawi for fundraiser Charlie

A 12-year-old boy, who refused birthday presents from the age of six so the money could be donated to hungry children in Malawi, has been given the Christmas present of a lifetime.

Charlie Doherty, from Bewbush, is currently starring in charity Mary’s Meals documentary film Child 31.

His life long dream has been to visit Malawi to meet children receiving Mary Meals, which he has raised £20,000 for through his fundraising efforts.

Charlie’s mum Julie surprised him with the news that he would be travelling out to Africa as a Christmas gift when they conquered the top of Mount Snowdon in Wales as part of a hike to raise funds for the charity.

The Malawi trip has been made a reality thanks to support from Charlie’s family and friends.

He will travel to Africa this month where he will spend his next birthday visiting the school which he supports through the charity’s Sponsor a School campaign.

Charlie said: “I can’t wait for the trip, it’s going to be amazing and great seeing the message of hope that is passed through Mary’s Meals.

“I also can’t wait to meet the children at the kitchen I have been sponsoring and see the great work of Mary’s Meals in action.”

Charlie sponsors Ipyana Primary School which is located in the northern district of Karonga, Malawi.

Thanks to his support, all the 1,429 children at the school receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals for a whole school year.
