Theatre group desperately needs men!

THE DIRECTOR of an amateur play is baffled by the lack of men who have signed up to join its cast and is appealing for more to give it a try.

Janine Robins will direct Hi-de-Hi, a play at Ifield Barn Theatre, which she hopes will take place between May 15 and 20.

She said: “If we cannot get any more men we will have to change to another play which is such a shame.

“The play is based on the television series and a lot of older people will remember it and know the characters. It would be like making Henry VIII a woman – it’s not right.”

The play is based on a fictional 1950s holiday camp and has a host of colourful characters.

Janine is looking for someone who is between 20 and 35-years old to play the character Spike.

She said: “He is as honest as the day is long and has a series of costume changes, including wearing a dustbin and a babies costume – he’s just silly really.”

There are another two roles which she is looking for men to fill, which can either be played separately or by the same person, and requires someone between 20 and 45-years old.

Janine will offer six weeks of free drama classes to anyone who wishes to join.

She said: “I think it’s a shame there aren’t more male members but I think acting is something that doesn’t occur to them. We have had four people come along, three girls and a bloke, which is great.

“There must be more blokes out there that are willing to give it a try.”

The theatre is also looking for more back stage helpers and youngsters to join.
