Thieves steal £2,000 from pensioner

First with the news.

First with the news.

Police in Crawley are hunting two thieves who stole more than £2,000 from an elderly Crawley resident.

On the afternoon of Tuesday March 20, two men called at the 79-year old’s house in Bramber Close, Northgate, and told him that he needed work done on his roof.

They drove him to a bank cashpoint and a nearby convenience store cashpoint where they stood by at each place as he withdrew a total of £2,150 which he handed over to them.

They said they would back the next day to require a further £9,000 to complete the job. No work was done and the men supplied no invoices, receipts or company details. They did not come back and no further money was handed over.

PC Adam Tidy said; “This victim was elderly and very vulnerable. The men are described as both being white, between about 30 and 40. They were driving a large white Ford van with ladders on the roof of the drivers side.

“We continue to advise residents to please be very wary of any such attempts by cold callers like these in the Crawley area or elsewhere. Have nothing to do with such people and contact police if at all suspicious via 101, or via 999 if they are still present or nearby. We will be only to happy to come and check them out.

“Anyone with any information about this heartless pair is asked to contact us via 101 quoting serial 0949 of 21/3. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.”
