Twenty jobs created at new sports store

Twenty new jobs have been created after the town’s former JJB Sports Store was bought by a family owned company.

DW Sports Fitness Ltd – founded by former Blackburn Rovers footballer Dave Whelan – announced that it had bought the store, in The Martlets, on Friday (January 25) and would be opening a branch of the DW Sports Store.

The purchase took the company’s overall estate to 66 sports stores and the shop is expected to open for business on Saturday February 23.

JJB Sports called in administrators in September last year and the store closed in October with the loss of 26 jobs.

The first month of 2013 had been somewhat depressing when it came to the town’s businesses.

The closure of photography retailer Jessops coupled with threats to music giant HMV and DVD rental firm Blockbuster seemed to be laying the groundwork for a particularly tough year.

But the announcement of the imminent opening of the DW Sports Store was greeted as “excellent news” by Cllr Claire Denman (Con, Pound Hill South and Worth), Cabinet member for planning and economic development.

She said: “This is a really positive step forward for the town in these days when you have big chains going under.

“It’s really good news for Crawley.”

Mr Whelan was forced to retire from football after being injured in the 1960 FA Cup Final.

He opened a sports shop in Wigan and built it into the retail giant that was JJB - with more than 400 stores - before selling the business in 2007.

Speaking about the opening of Crawley’s new store, he said: “It is disappointing to see JJB in such financial trouble. Having bought the health clubs and retail stores from them three-and-a-half years ago it is our intention now to make the DW sports store in Crawley one of our top retail stores.”
