The leader of Crawley Borough Council’s Conservative Group has said the town’s only UKIP councillor should have resigned earlier.
Karl Williamson, who defected from the Conservative Party to UKIP, resigned from his Southgate seat today (Friday August 29).
Cllr Duncan Crow (Con, Furnace Green) said: “Had he resigned in April, a by-election could have been held at the same time as the existing election in May at no extra cost to the taxpayer.
“If a by-election were now to happen, it would take place in October and the elected councillor would serve less than seven months before their election came up again.
“When there are already two existing councillors for Southgate, residents would rightly question whether the council spending several thousand pounds of taxpayers money was the right thing to do when the seat comes up again in less than seven months time.”
