Crawley’s only UKIP councillor has said stepping down from his Southgate seat was “the right thing” to do.

Karl Williamson, who defected from the Conservative Party to UKIP, announced his resignation today (Friday August 29).

Mr Williamson, who works full-time as cabin crew at Gatwick and Heathrow, said his work had become “increasingly busy”.

He added: “It was a difficult decision because politics is something I like.

“It’s a little sad but you’ve got to do the right thing.”

He said he would support UKIP as a member of the public and had notified Lee Gilroy, Crawley UKIP chairman, prior to his decision to step down.
