Inspectors have deemed a footbridge in Crawley unsafe to use after it was struck by a vehicle as is passed under it.
The Gatwick Road footbridge between the Hazelwick flyover and Manor Royal was struck by the arm of a passing cement mixer this afternoon (Wednesday March 12).
A bridge inspector from West Sussex County Council assessed the damage.
A spokesman said: “The vehicle was travelling in the south bound carriageway and impacted the underside of the steel channels that form the span of the footbridge causing significant damage.
“We have since taken the decision to close the structure whilst we undertake a more detailed investigation to assess the safety and load capacity of the bridge.”
A pedestrian diversion is in place.
