UPDATE: Van driver, 24, in hospital with serious head injuries after crash which closed M23 for 10 hours
A 24-year-old man from Croydon is still in hospital with a serious head injury after his transit crashed on the M23 near Crawley on Saturday (February 23).
The collision caused travel chaos on Saturday with the motorway not fully reopened until more than ten hours after the incident.
Vehicles were able to pass in single lanes in both directions while the Highways Agency repaired damage to the central reservation.
The injured driver was the sole occupant of a Ford transit van belonging to his employer, a drainage company.
He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
His condition is described as serious but not life-threatening.
According to reports the northbound van collided with the central reservation causing damage over some 200 yards and affecting both carriageways.
Emergency services were called to the M23 just south of the Crawley intersection (junction 10) at 4.30pm.
Vehicles were able to pass the scene using the on and off sliproads at junction 10 but drivers were warned to avoid the M23 around Crawley.
The motorway was fully opened at 3am on Sunday morning.
