An 18-year-old man was arrested for possession of a loaded BB gun near St Wilfrid’s School last night (Wednesday October 9).
Police cordoned off part of Old Horsham Road, Southgate, and searched the area after a woman reported seeing three teenagers with a firearm outside the school at 6pm.
A BB gun was located at a house in Old Horsham Road and a man was arrested shortly afterwards. Sussex Police said no one was hurt.
A police helicopter was seen circling the area and residents were not allowed to enter or leave the estate.
Sarah Magrath, a resident of Old Horsham Road, said she felt fearful when her husband called to warn her not to open her door.
She said: “My husband texted me and said, ‘Don’t open the door to anybody, I can’t get onto the road because police have cordoned it off because they’ve had a confirmed report of a person with a firearm.
“I locked all the doors and it felt a bit frightening.
“Until he came back I was a bit fearful somebody was going to be trying to knock my door down.
“My husband had a key but he rang the door bell before he used his key and immediately I thought somebody’s ringing the door bell and didn’t know who it was.”
Marvin Hinton, of Old Horsham Road, said he could not enter the estate and had to wait in Goffs Manor carpark.
He said: “There were 20 to 30 people there, it was packed. We wondered what had happened.”
The road and school re-opened at 7pm.
A man has been questioned and released on bail until November 7.
