UPDATED:Hands off our history! - your comments

PENNY-pinching developers want to knock down this beautiful building because they reckon its ceilings are too high – but the Observer says hands off our history.

Nightingale House, in Brighton Road, Southgate, has

been standing since the 19th Century.

But according to plans submitted to the town hall the historical

house – which is not protected by listed status – will be bulldozed to

make way for a monstrous mix of apartments and offices.

And incredibly, the distinctive building is being targeted because

it's just too roomy.

In a design statement issued by agents RDJW Architects Limited on behalf

of James B Bennett, a spokesman explained: "The existing building, whilst it has a character faade is hugely inefficient internally,

with large floor to ceiling heights increasing the costs of running

the building and many internal corridors providing substandard office space."

The Observer understands that the new development would see a

total of eight apartments and a number of offices.

But historians and residents are worried that the new glass-fronted building would see another part of Crawley's heritage disappear forever.

Keen local historian Pete Allen said: "It is a shame if they do knock

it down; it is a land mark for the town.

"I have a picture taken before and it was always there. It is a

recognisable building, and people will miss it when it's gone."

Cllr Dan Kavanagh said: "Although I am completely for the regeneration

of Crawley and for new housing to supply our needs I do feel that

losing such a beautiful example of Victorian architecture would be a

great loss for future and current generations."

The Tory man also said council bosses are searching for

information on the building to apply for listed status.

He said: "Crawley Borough Council is currently attempting to collect

enough information about Nightingale House to apply for listed building protection.

"However, we need some public assistance in this and any information

that members of the Public may have to help us in this endeavour."

Do you have any information or photographs that could unlock the secret of Nightingale house and save it from the wrecking ball?

Or do you simply want to share your views on the plan.
