Staff and students at a Crawley school bowed their heads as a lone trumpeter played the Last Post during the dedication of a new war memorial.
Veterans joined the gathering at Holy Trinity School, Gossops Green, today (Thursday July 17), while a standard bearer from the Royal British Legion lowered the colours in respect.
The dedication was timed to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One and wreaths were laid by pupils and guests.
One, from the Crawley branch of the Royal Naval Association read: “In memory of those who have crossed the bar. For our tomorrow you gave your today.”
The school’s wreath read: “With our hearts full of gladness, gratitude and respect, the staff, governors and young people of the Holy Trinity School.”
