Plans for a new museum in the Crawley town centre have been welcomed during a public consultation.

Talks on plans to create a museum in The Tree, an historic building in the High Street, are taking place and the first public viewing of plans took place in County Mall on Saturday (March 16).

Helen Poole, curator of the museum, was pleased by the people’s reaction to the idea.

She said: “[The town centre location] will give us much more space to do interesting things, to engage a much wider selection of the community and really make the museum part of the community.

“I haven’t had anyone say anything other than ‘what a brilliant idea’ and ‘go for it’.”

Cllr Duncan Crow (Con, Furnace Green), Crawley Borough Council cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Despite being a relatively new town, Crawley has a wealth of fascinating history and culture.

“It would be fantastic to see this on display in a new museum. I would encourage anyone with an idea or suggestion to have their say at an exhibition event and help shape how Crawley’s history is represented.”

The Crawley Museum Society (CMS) and Crawley Borough Council are putting together a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) application to secure funding for a museum.

Jeff Herbert from Southgate is keen to see the creation of the new museum.

He suggested the idea of a ‘sponsor a brick’ system to fund a museum at a council meeting in September 2010 andhas finally started to see the idea gain interest.

He said: “It’s an ideal way to advertise the fact that they want a new museum.

“If people are given a chance to have their name put on a brick they are likely to be more interested in the building.”

Cllr Brenda Burgess (Con, Three Bridges) liked Jeff’s idea.

She said: “I will speak to anyone I can think of who might be able to help and email everyone. I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t be in favour.”
