VIDEO: Teen’s skydive to raise cash for kids’ hospital

A 16-year-old girl will skydive to raise money for the children’s hospital which cared for a friend’s niece.

Sophie Nulty from Northgate was inspired by the treatment given at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

She said: “A family friend went through a lot with Great Ormond Street. I saw how it affected her and her family.

“Her niece was in there from birth, she was in and out until she passed away at the age of two.”

Sophie experienced this eye-opening tragedy nearly six years ago and has wanted to do something to raise money for that charity ever since.

She said: “After seeing that I researched the hospital and read all the stories of the different patients that have been looked after there, it pulled on my heart strings, and now I want to do good by giving them something back.

“I’ve come to an age where I want to go out and do stuff and help people and now I’m 16 I can do the skydive.

“It’s something I’m really excited to do but I think when I’m up in the air I will feel nervous.”

GOSH is a charity run hospital which deals with more than 200,000 patients every year and requires funding of more than £50 million a year to continue its service.

The hospital is currently undergoing the second phase of a redevelopment programme that aims to create a new clinical building which is environmentally friendly with many energy saving features.

In order to finish this redevelopment, the charity needs to raise £45 million.

Sophie, an Oriel High School student, wants to raise at least £700 to help with the day-to-day running as well as the new development.

She said: “The money will go towards new equipment and to expanding the hospital.

“It will also pay for beds and rooms for parents who want to stay with their child overnight.”
