THE OBSERVER has had an overwhelming response in the fight to save Nightingale House from demolition.
Since the Save Our History campaign last week, residents have expressed disgust at developers' plans to knock down the building, in Brighton Road, and pave the way for another faceless office block - all because the developers say the ceilings are too high to maintain.
The Observer has also learnt that residents living in Brighton Road and surrounding area have appealed to the Independent Town Planning Services because they feel the new proposed building will obstruct private houses and their gardens.
They also think the development won't fit in with the Brighton Road street scene.
Concerned residents have also left comments on the Observer's website slamming the new building - which also includes apartments.
Cllr Dan Kavanagh in an exclusive interview about the new plans, said: "Well obviously I am very disappointed that it will possibly be knocked down.
"It is just a perfect example of our architecture; we have lost so much already with developments going up.
"Crawley residents are quite disappointed that the developers have come forward and want to take this building down. I am appealing to people to come forward and give us some information so that we can apply for listed building status."
But amazingly, the developers believe the new building will offer the 'distinctive' character and compatibility to the area the council have outlined for successful application.
