Woman hit over head during Horley robbery attempt

A 66-year-old woman was hit over the head in an attempted robbery in Horley and police are appealing for witnesses.

The incident happened between 7pm and 7.30pm on Thursday 21 February as the victim walked home along the Balcombe Road (B2036).

She was opposite the junction of Fernhill Road when she was approached from behind and hit with on the head with what is believed to be a brick. The suspect then tried to grab her handbag, but failed, before running off towards woodland behind Gatwick Airport.

A police spokesperson said: “The victim was understandably extremely shaken by this incident and suffered cuts to her head and also her knee as she fell forward.

“The suspect is described as male, 5ft 10in tall, of medium build, wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up and dark trousers.

“Anyone who witnessed what happened or who has information about it is asked to call polic on 101, quoting serial 0734 of 3 March. Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
