A 49-year-old woman has been banned from the roads for four years after she was found behind the wheel while almost four times the drink-drive limit.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said Elisa Kern was driving slowly and erratically along Crawley Avenue towards the M23 at 11pm on June 28 when she was stopped by police.

When she was breathalysed she had 139 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millitres of her breath - almost four times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Kern, of Earls Avenue, Folkestone, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from the roads for 48 months. She was given a 19-week suspended prison sentence, was ordered to attend an alcohol addiction course and told to pay an £80 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

She is one of another 20 motorists to have been convicted of offences during June after being arrested as part of Operation Dragonfly, the force’s crackdown on drink and drug driving in Sussex.

A total of 38 drivers have so far been convicted of offences they committed during the operation in June.

Superintendent Jane Derrick said: “Elisa Kern had already served a four-year ban after being caught drink-driving in 2004 but she has clearly refused to change her ways.

“Mixing drink of any amount with driving is dangerous but to have got behind the wheel while so far over the limit shows a shocking disregard for the safety of other people, never mind Kern herself.

“Kern must have known that she was in no fit state to be driving but decided to do so anyway.

“I can only hope that the alcohol diversion course the court has ordered her to attend will encourage her to take more responsibility for her behaviour. Otherwise the next time we catch her drink-driving it could be at the scene of a tragedy that she has caused or could lead to her being jailed.”

Among the others charged were Prayiat Patel, 36, who was arrested at 2.10am on June 28 after he was seen to push another man in Station Way, Crawley, after getting out of his car.

Patel, of Angell Close, Maidenbower, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was banned from the roads for 36 months. He was also fined £250 and ordered to pay a £25 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Nicholas Bailey, 68, was arrested at 10.55pm on June 29 after officers were given information he was drink driving in Crawley Down.

Bailey, of Cuttinglye Road, Crawley Down, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis and was banned from the roads for 12 months. He was also fined £110 and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
