Worthing's graffiti show
ARTISTIC youngsters have graffiti-tagged Worthing Museum and Art Gallery - but they had permission.
Youngsters were divided into two groups, 10 to 12 year olds and 13 to 18 year olds, and created unique graffiti artwork to display at the Museum and Art Gallery in Chapel Road.
Both groups were helped by graffiti artists, who taught them techniques such as 3D, highlighting and chracter design. The older group, dubbed the Arty Rascals, worked on a five-week project to produce their work.
Children from Durrington Middle School in Salvington Road got involved in the project, which aimed at showing young people how graffiti art could be used in a positive way. They were also taught about the dangers of hoax calling and produced work with this message.
Simon Wood, deputy head teacher at Durrington Middle, said: "Our pupils were very keen to become involved in such a powerful project - one where the 'coolness' of street art and the reality of important life-changing messages could be combined. This has now become a reality through the exhibition and we are now really excited about seeing how far the message will travel through the anticipated county-wide campaign."
Kathy Jones, Arson Reduction Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services, adds: "One of the great things about this project is to be able to work with issues that have been raised with the youngsters themselves in their community. Durrington High pupils carried out their own survey which identified hoax calls as a problem in their community. So this makes our job easier helping us to target our resources properly."
The exhibition will end on January 5
