Man charged over Horley arsons


A man has been charged following a number of arson attacks.

David Stephens, 29, of Massetts Road, Horley, was arrested by Surrey Police as part of Operation Retinta, which investigated a series of arsons carried out in the Horley and Reigate areas.

Stephens was charged with eight counts of arson, three counts of criminal damage, and one count of attempted criminal damage.

He was remanded in custody and was set to appear at Guildford Magistrates Court on Tuesday (August 12) when the Crawley Observer went to press.

The arson charges related to offences involving:

Horley Lawn Tennis Club, in Vicarage Lane, Horley on Sunday June 22;

Churchfields Bowls Club, Church Walk, Reigate on Thursday June 26;

Old Reigatians Rugby Club, Park Lane, Reigate on Saturday June 28 and Saturday July 12;

Two Surrey Police vehicles at Reigate Town Hall, Reigate on Friday between July 10 and 11;

Oakwood Sports Centre, Balcombe Road, between July 20 and 21;

A car tyre and a chair in a garden at a property in Massetts Road, Horley, on August 9 and 11.

The three charges of criminal damage related to offences at:

Barclays Bank in Victoria Road, Horley on Saturday July 5;

Barclays Bank in Bell Street, Reigate on Thursday July 17;

A property in Massetts Road, Horley on Monday July 21.

The final charge was one of attempted criminal damage at a property in Massetts Road, Horley on August 8.
