The borough council gave the green light to a revamp of the empty shops in the corner of Queens Square and Queensway.

A planning document said a ‘major retailer’ and its landlord were ‘keen to reinstate the building as a singular identity within the square’.

Councillor Peter Smith, cabinet member for economic development, said: “It’s a new retailer to the town, an international company.

“We know exactly what’s going on there and we’ve been working very hard with the owner for a long period of time.

“We’ll be announcing it together with them very shortly.

“It’s directly as a result of the works of our town centre officer that we are going to get a new shop there.”

Crawley Borough Council officers gave planning permission for developer Galgorm Properties to remove the existing canopy and install new ground floor entrance door with alluminium glazed shop fronts and fascias in 20-24 Queens Square and 2-4 Queens Way.

A planning report stated: “It is disappointing that the canopy would be removed as it does provide a function in providing cover for people during inclement weather and times of hot sunshine and forms a part of the distinct character of development along Queens Way and around Queens Square.”
