New Reds midfielder speaks of playoff hopes

CRAWLEY Town's latest signing Barry Cogan says he is determined to help the team build on last year's excellent season and go one better by reaching the playoffs.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 central midfielder, 24, became Reds fifth signing of a busy close season last week, and is champing at the bit to turn out in front of the Broadfield faithful.

Cogan – who came on as a substitute in the 2004 FA Cup final for Millwall against Manchester Utd – said: "Basically the manager phoned me to ask if I was interested, and because I have played against Crawley a few times I know the way they play and like their style of play and the setup."

Having been in the promotion hunt for most of what was a memorable season, Town eventually finished ninth in the Blue Square Premier.

Having made five new signings since the end of the season, their latest believes there is no reason why they cannot mount another assault on the playoffs.

"Definitely I think we can," declared Cogan, who played for Conference Premier rivals Grays Athletic last term and has played for Football League teams Gillingham and Barnet.

"They weren't too far off last season and had points deducted and players injured at key times. This year with a few extra players I really think we can mount a challenge."
