Teenagers wearing ‘beer goggles’ designed to mimic drink driving went on a driving simulator at Crawley Fire Station this morning (October 28).

Firefighters gave road safety advice and demonstrated equipment for cutting people out of cars to some 15 youths aged 16 to 17 during the visit.

Marc Clayton, watch manager at Crawley Fire Station, said before the event: “This is a great opportunity to engage with young people at the beginning of their driving lives, which is often when they are most at risk on the road.

“We want them to enjoy their visit to the station, but also to take away a new understanding of the potential consequences of the decisions they make as drivers and passengers. It’s about empowering young people with the knowledge and skills to make good decisions.”

Crawley Town FC arranged the visit as part its National Citizens Service (NCS) programme.

The NCS is a voluntary personal and social development programme which helps young people build skills for work and life.

Claire Burrage-Edwards, NCS Programme co-ordinator for Crawley Town Football Club, said: “It is brilliant to be able to give these young people the opportunity through NCS to take part in activities like this. They are able to get a better understanding about how their actions affect other people to hopefully help guide them to make the better decisions and life choices.

“Their NCS journey teaches them about leadership, team building and independence. Being involved with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service will certainly be helping them with these qualities. I would like to thank Marc and Crawley Fire Station for all their help in organising this event for our young people.”
