Routes are axed in new bus timetable

Metrobus has announced timetable changes in Crawley, Mid Sussex and Horsham, which will come into effect from Saturday, April 29.

These include route 3, which travels to Warden Park School in Cuckfield, Haywards Heath, which will no longer be operated by Metrobus.

Other major changes include the Burgess Hill town routes 34 and 35, which are being withdrawn, due to low use.

Alternative options will be provided by Compass Travel routes 134 and 135.

Metrobus head of commercial Nick Hill said: “We have served Burgess Hill with routes 34 and 35 over the past few years but have found it increasingly difficult.

“Passenger numbers have been falling considerably every year and we’re now in a position where the service’s revenue no longer covers essential costs such as fuel and salary, let alone contributing to vehicle depreciation, maintenance and insurance.

“The bus running the 34 and 35 also operates peak time journeys to and from the college.

“With the closure of Central Sussex College in Haywards Heath looming, the number of students using these services is already minimal and so these journeys will have to be withdrawn.”

The 682 service will also no longer operate due to the closure of the college.

Alternative options will be available using routes 270 and 272.

There will be a revised timetable on Monday to Saturday on route 270 to improve reliability, however a new Sunday and public holiday service is being added to the route.

The schoolday afternoon journey from Haywards Heath to East Grinstead, however, is being withdrawn due to the closure of the college.

A Saturday service is being added on route 272 to Brighton and the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Additional journeys are also being added to the service to improve reliability.

For Crawley passengers, changes include route 2 which will extend to Tilgate Park on weekends and public holidays, route 20 which will run every 15 minutes along with a new overnight service between Gatwick and Broadfield. More journeys will be available on route 272 and extend to Brighton and Royal Sussex County Hospital on Saturdays. More journeys will also be on offer on routes 23 and 271.

For Horsham passengers, route 98 is being re-routed away from Timber Mill in Southwater and will run direct along Worthing Road instead, serving the Junior School stop.

This is to bring the service closer to the new housing development to the west of Worthing Road and to reduce the journey time for users in other parts of Southwater.

A new early morning Saturdays journey from Southwater will also be added.
