Saunders: Every point is vital and Crewe draw may keep us up

The former Welsh international had labelled it a four-point weekend with their home clash with Oldham still to come on Monday.

A 0-0 draw, despite late chances for Crawley to pinch the points was a fair results from Gresty Road and Saunders was quick to laud his side’s recent form.

He said: “That’s three wins a draw and a defeat so we are on a decent run and we lost last week, so getting a point away from home in a crunch game, as long as we win on Monday, it is a good result.

“That point might keep us up, every point is vital. We stayed in the game today, we didn’t play particularly well first half and second half we were much better.

“In the last 15 minutes, I felt we got right on top of them and we looked like we were going to score any minute, unfortunately, we never, but we never threw the game away at the end and walked away with nothing.

“I can’t say anything about the referee’s performance, I am not allowed, so we will leave it at that.”

Reds had injury-time appeals waved away as a Lee Fowler corner went close to the goalline and Saunders added: “I thought it was over the line and the lads have said it wasn’t, but really someone has got to go and poke that over the line.

“It was bouncing around in their box, there were numerous balls in their box that we never got on the end of today.”

“We need a bit of luck. There is a lot of luck involved. If that ball goes over the line we are walking away with three points, having not particularly played very well, but we have the points.”

On the points they need for safety, Saunders said: “It’s changing every game, I thought 50, but maybe 52, I don’t know. I said if we can win three or four games then that’s the end of that, so we will concentrate on that and try and go unbeaten until the end of the season.

“If you go unbeaten that’s seven points, you are going to be close.”

The Crawley interim boss also confirmed Darren Ward is out for the season after picking up a foot injury, Dean Leacock also limped off today on his return from a groin injury.
