SLIDESHOW: Shewan Perera's funeral

FAMILY and friends of a Pound Hill youngster killed in a car crash last Saturday celebrated his life at a funeral service, last week.

Shewan Perera, 20, of Heathfield, died when a car driven by his 14-year-old friend, Sundeep Majhail, ploughed into a family home in Balcombe.

Around 450 people, including the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, turned out on Thursday to pay their respects to the former Hazelwick student.

Shewan's sister Shenain, his friends Luke and Tarran and his uncle Deepal Ahangama, all paid tribute to his short but eventful life.

His uncle Deepal told mourners: "Shewan was the same to everyone. Kind, helpful caring and at times that wacky sense of humour.

"The words that keep coming up are love, care, adoration, protection, this is what Shewan really was.

"He would always protect the weak and be there for his family and mates, that was true love and care.

"He had such a wonderful way about him. He could really make you feel good and special by the way he greeted you, like you were the most important person on the planet."
