Macmillan Cancer Support and East Surrey Hospital are working together to build an on-site cancer information and support centre.

East Surrey, which is the main hospital for Crawley residents, hopes the centre to be open in 2015 subject to planning permission.

In a joint statement Macmillan Cancer Support and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “Macmillan Cancer Support and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust are working together on a proposal for building a new Macmillan cancer information and support centre at East Surrey Hospital.

“Our aim is for the new service to provide a range of practical, emotional and financial support and information for people living with cancer and their families, during and after treatment, so no one faces cancer alone.

“We are also in discussions with the Olive Tree charity about working together to provide this holistic service. Both charities and the Trust are very excited about these plans, which if approved, would see a new centre open in 2015.”

It is the second improvement in cancer care being made at the hospital. In a joint project with Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, a £10m radiotherapy unit is being built at East Surrey. It will mean that from the summer patients will no longer have to travel to London or Guildford for treatment.
