In Worthing, the news that the area voted to leave was met with a mixed response.

Mark Antony Heselton said: “Best news ever. Spend our money in our country and we will soon be able to decide who comes into our country. June 23 will go down as our Independence Day.”

Jake Gurr said: “We are literally on our own now dipping in to the unknown with no idea what the consequences could be for ourselves, our children and their children. This isn’t the day we became ‘Great Britain’ again, this is the day we turned our backs on everyone else.”

Iolanda La Clegg was more balanced, commenting on a post by the Chichester Observer: “Upwards and onward. We can only be successful together with a positive outlook whatever ones decision was.”

In Horsham, the only area in the county to vote remain, Wiesia Scott commented: “It is all very sad but it was to be expected. The country is divided and only time will tell if to leave Europe was a right decision.”

Caroline Gould added: “Thank you Horsham, so proud that you are my home town. Sad about the result.”

In Eastbourne, Sandra Hendrie said: “Watch this space, the rest of Europe will follow. Italy already in talks about having a referendum. It wasn’t working us being in there, so change had to happen. So let’s stand together and let’s make Britain great again.”

Brenda Hodgson added: “My grandfather that fought for his country would be so happy today.”

But in Hastings, the leave vote was not received well online.

Angela Long said she was ‘disgusted’, while Steve Wilkins said: “Meanwhile, the pound instantly drops to the lowest level since 1985. Well done people.”

Dick Wheeler said the result allowed Britain to take control of its ‘destiny’.

He said: “Well done to everyone who voted out and helped make this momentous occasion possible. There is still a way to go but today is the start of that journey. Celebrate the win and just ignore the sour grapes.”
