STEVE Evans dedicated Crawley’s 4-2 defeat of Cheltenham last night to the fans who helped clear the Broadfield Stadium pitch.

An army of volunteers cleared more than 100 tonnes of snow from the playing surface to ensure the match went ahead, and aside from £180 of free pizza from Papa John’s, were rewarded by a scintillating Crawley display as Sanchez Watt and Tyrone Barnett both scored twice to put the Reds back on top of League 2.

Crawley Evans enthused: “Without them we don’t get the three points do we? I don’t usually mention the fans during my teamtalk, as a player you should have that in you. But I came to ground yesterday to look at the pitch and there were people queuing with shovels, that was just after 7am, and I came back here last night to have a meeting about a possible player and the same people were still on the pitch.

“It was an incredible commitment, I’m watching people getting patched up with blisters and sore lips; and from the dressing room ‘thank you’. We hope the performance is sending them home warm in their hearts tonight because this was for them.”

New signing Billy Clarke shone on his debut, as did Watt, as the Reds played with a swagger at times against their promotion rivals, gaining revenge for a 3-1 loss at Whaddon Road earlier in the season.

“I think for 60-70 minutes that was as good a League 2 performance you will see in terms of passing football, that was fantastic to watch,” Evans added. “I though at one stage we could run away and give them a good hiding.”
