Brian Quinn, West Sussex county councillor for Broadfield, lives in nearby Selsey Road and was alerted to the incident by a neighbour.

He took a number of photographs of the damaged car at the scene.

He said: “A lot of people were turning up and looking, it looked really horrific.

“I thought there is no way anybody could have got out alive, but the guy walked into the ambulance.

“It is lucky there was nobody at the bus stop, normally it is quite popular. Thank God there was nobody there.”

The driver, a man in his 70s, suffered chest injuries.

South East Coast Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance and a critical care paramedic in a car to the incident.

The man was conscious and after treatment at the scene he was taken to East Surrey Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Pelham Drive was closed for around three hours while the car was removed and the damaged bus shelter and a lamppost were dealt with.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information can email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 999 of 14/06.
