Police are searching the home of a Crawley man who has been arrested under Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The 40-year-old was arrested today (January 7), though police are refusing to reveal the address.
Crawley MP Henry Smith said he was contacted by Crawley District commander Chief Inspector Justina Beeken this morning to alert him to the investigation between officers from the South East Counter Terrorism Unit (SECTU) and Sussex Police.
Mr Smith said he believed the address was in Langley Green – and the ward’s councillor Brenda Smith confirmed she had received a called about the operation, which she said was “low key”.
Mr Smith said: “I believe it relates to activities overseas, which I understand to be the Syrian civil war, and wasn’t related to any activities known in the UK.”
He added: “I have to say the local police are always very good at keeping me informed about this sort of situation.
“Obviously it’s important they inform the public but at the same time get on with their investigation without compromising their information.”
Updates to follow.
