The driver of a vehicle involved in a crash which caused traffic chaos may have collapsed at the wheel.

Three vehicles were involved in the collision on the southbound exit slip road of the M23 at junction 11, Pease Pottage, yesterday (Tuesday March 11).

The incident happened at about 3.30pm and fire, police and the ambulance service were called.

It caused delays around Crawley into the rush hour due to carriageways being closed for around one-and-a-half hours.

A spokesman for South East Coast ambulance said the crane vehicle driver may have ‘suffered a medical event of some kind’, however that is under investigation.

He was unconscious for some time, but regained consciousness by the time the ambulance left the scene at 4.45pm.

The patient was taken to East Surrey Hospital by road.

Police are investigating the exact cause of the collision. Anyone with information can call police on 101.
