Southern Water has explained the reason behind the closure of a major Crawley road last week.

The A2220 Horsham Road was closed between the Albany Road junction and the Springfield Road level crossing at around 7am on Thursday July 9 after a water leak was discovered, causing problems on the roads for many commuters.

The issue saw the road close for nine hours whilst engineers fixed the broken water mains.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closure on Thursday July 9.

“It is not yet clear what caused the leak but it likely to be the result of ground movement and the impact of traffic on the road.

“Crews were dispatched at 7am to find and repair the leak, which took five hours, and reinstate the road with tarmac.

“We reopened the road at 4pm once the tarmac had dried and was safe to drive on.”
