Police said the car was in collision with another oncoming vehicle before hitting a stationary car and ending up on its side.

A woman driving the flipped car suffered a head injury. She was treated at the scene and is not thought to be seriously hurt.

The fire service was called just after 3.10pm. Firefighters said no-one was trapped and crews helped make the scene safe.

A spokesman for Sussex Police added: “The precise sequence of events is subject of investigation.”

The road was blocked for more than an hour while the incident was dealt with.

It caused traffic chaos with the village becoming gridlocked just before school pickup time.

Resident Alan Stainer described the nightmare as he went to pick up his children from Storrington First School.

He said: “It was absolute chaos. Traffic was at a standstill because people are using Spierbridge Road as a cut through to get past it.

“The police actually came outside the school to move traffic on as with everyone cutting through at pick up time it was going to be dangerous.

“We have got evening clubs for the kids tonight but we may have to cancel them as we won’t be able to get through the traffic.”

The road has now been re-opened.
